Jesus said: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die. John 11,25

Hanskarl von Unger passed away on April 17, 2021 at the age of 90. Many were surprised by his death, as he had just returned to matters of the Egypt partnership at the beginning of the month.

For many years he was chairman of the Development Aid Committee and a member of the Synod of Moers. Through a development aid project of the church district in India, which was initiated by his work at Krupp and his work abroad in India, the Synod of Moers formed the development aid committee, of which he was chairman from the beginning. In 1979, the partnership work with the Coptic Church in Egypt was started and replaced India.

Unforgotten are the meetings with Bishop Athanasios of the diocese Beni Suef and the sisterhood „Daughters of Saint Mary“.Through various trips to Egypt and visits of the Coptic partners to us in the Synod, a confidence developed in which many projects could be realized. These include projects to fight poverty through village development programs, vocational support for girls, schools and health stations in Beni Suef and the garbage areas of Cairo.

In the last 15 years, after his leaving for reasons of age, Hanskarl von Unger was still indirectly involved and with his positive and kind view, a great help to us. For our 30th anniversary in 2009 he was once again with his wife on a partnership trip.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

We say goodbye to a friend of the Egypt partnership and know him safe in God’s hand!
